Like a Dragon Studio: Conflict Fuels Creativity
The Fiery Forging of a Dragon
Series director Ryosuke Horii shared that disagreements among team members are not just common, but actively encouraged. These "in-fights," he explained, are a vital part of the creative process. Horii emphasized the role of the planner in mediating these conflicts, ensuring they lead to constructive outcomes. "If there are no arguments or discussions," he stated, "the final product will be mediocre. Therefore, healthy conflict is always welcome." The key, he added, is ensuring that disagreements result in positive solutions, with planners guiding the team towards a fruitful conclusion.
Horii further highlighted the studio's commitment to meritocracy. Ideas are judged solely on their quality, regardless of their origin. This open approach, however, is balanced by a willingness to decisively reject subpar concepts. "We mercilessly dismiss poor ideas," Horii confirmed, emphasizing that robust debate and even "battles" are essential for achieving excellence. The studio's culture fosters a collaborative environment where constructive conflict drives innovation and ultimately, results in superior game design.
