Everwild's Development Update: Still Alive and Kicking

Over five years since its initial announcement at Microsoft's X019, Rare's Everwild has faced speculation and rumors of delays and reboots. However, Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed the game is still actively in development.

In a recent interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for Everwild, highlighting a recent visit to Rare studios to assess the game's progress. He emphasized Microsoft's ability to provide development teams, including those working on Everwild, State of Decay, and the next Double Fine project, with the necessary time, despite a robust release schedule fueled by acquisitions like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Spencer specifically noted the team's dedication and the progress being made.

The game's development hasn't been without its challenges. Rumors of a reboot, which Microsoft has denied, and the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020, caused concern among fans. However, veteran designer Gregg Mayles (known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves) has since taken the director's role.

While early reports described Everwild as a third-person adventure game with god game elements, the extended development time suggests potential changes to the original vision. The last trailer, released in July 2020, simply described it as "a brand new IP from Rare. A unique and unforgettable experience await in a natural and magical world."

With a packed pipeline of upcoming titles including Perfect Dark, the next Halo installment, Fable, The Elder Scrolls 6, and the next Call of Duty, Everwild's release date remains unannounced. However, Spencer's comments offer reassurance that the game is progressing and remains a priority for Microsoft.
