In an interview with PC Gamer (Magazine Issue 405, reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025), director Junya Ishizaki revealed Nightreign's revolutionary map design. Expect dramatic, large-scale terrain changes: volcanoes, sprawling forests, and treacherous poison swamps will appear procedurally, transforming the game world with each playthrough.

This dynamic approach to level design ensures a constantly evolving challenge. Poison swamps and other environmental hazards will force strategic adaptations, demanding players adjust their tactics as they navigate the ever-changing landscape and confront enemies. Ishizaki explained the vision: "We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon, offering a different traversal experience every time." The strategic implications are significant; forested areas, for example, offer cover to both player and enemy, adding a new layer of tactical depth.

This design choice also influences combat strategy. Ishizaki elaborates: "Once you've chosen your approach, your strategy against a boss might change, impacting how you navigate the map. We wanted to give players that agency – the choice to say, 'I need a poison weapon this time.'"

Familiar terrains from previous titles might also reappear, including the perilous Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot, known for their debilitating effects. These procedurally generated areas may also feature unique enemies, potentially including Giant Lobsters or Crabs, fearsome Runebears, the fiery Magma Wyrms, and other formidable foes from the Souls series.
