Kevin Edwards, a former developer at Genepool Software, recently shared on Twitter (X) previously unseen images from a canceled Iron Man game slated for a 2003 release. Edwards stated the game's intended title was "The Invincible Iron Man", echoing the character’s original comic book name. Edwards reportedly contributed to the project following the studio's successful superhero game X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.

Edwards’ post, showcasing the game's title card, Genepool Software’s logo, and gameplay screenshots, was followed by another featuring original Xbox gameplay footage. The footage displayed the game's startup screen and a brief tutorial segment set in a desert environment.

Despite Edwards’ cherished memories of the project and enthusiastic support from fans who saw the post, "The Invincible Iron Man" was reportedly canceled by Activision mere months after its development commenced. Genepool Software itself was shuttered soon after, leaving Edwards and his team unemployed.

Although Activision never publicly explained the game’s cancellation, Edwards offered some potential explanations in response to several commenters.

"We never got to hear the precise reason(s) why they canceled it," Edwards replied. "The film's delay was a significant factor, or perhaps they didn't deem the game satisfactory and thus chose not to fund it further. Or perhaps another developer was selected to take over."

Other commenters were also swift to highlight Tony Stark’s character design, which differed significantly from the Iron Man we know today. This game would have preceded Robert Downey Jr.’s now-iconic MCU portrayal by nearly five years, and thus, the character’s suit design more closely mirrored its comic book equivalent from the "Ultimate Marvel" run of the early 2000s, as noted by several commenters.

Edwards was unsure why such a design was selected for the game, writing "No idea I'm afraid. That was the [designer’s] decision." Regardless, Edwards pledged to follow up on his previous two posts with more gameplay footage, although, at the time of writing, Edwards has yet to deliver on his pledge.
