Shadow of the Colossus Film Gets New Update

Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project's development has spanned over a decade, beginning with its announcement by Sony Pictures in 2009, Muschietti assures fans it's far from abandoned. The original game's director, Fumito Ueda, was involved early on, and Josh Trank was initially slated to direct before scheduling conflicts intervened.

Muschietti's involvement follows Sony's recent announcement of several other video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.

In an interview on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso, Muschietti clarified that the Shadow of the Colossus film is actively in development, but faces challenges. He emphasized that factors beyond creative ambition, particularly the IP's popularity and the resulting budgetary considerations, are influencing the timeline. He confirmed the existence of multiple scripts, indicating ongoing refinement of the project.

The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact is undeniable, influencing titles like Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. While Muschietti isn't a self-described "big gamer," he acknowledges the game's masterpiece status and his personal experience playing it multiple times. Ueda, the creator of the original game's unique atmosphere, has since established his own studio, GenDesign, and recently unveiled a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024.

Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, Shadow of the Colossus retains its enduring appeal. Muschietti's adaptation aims to capture that magic, hoping to resonate with existing fans and introduce the game's compelling world to a wider audience.
