Helldivers 2 Creative Director Goes on Sabbatical After 11 Years 'Working Around the Clock' on the Same IP, Will Return to Work on Arrowhead’s Next Game

Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, has announced a sabbatical leave. Upon his return, he will begin work on Arrowhead’s next project. In a tweet, Pilestedt explained that eleven years of dedicated work on the Helldivers franchise, encompassing both the original game (since 2013) and Helldivers 2 (since early 2016), has led him to prioritize his well-being and family. He aims to reconnect with loved ones after a period of intense dedication. Arrowhead assures fans that development on Helldivers 2 will continue during his absence.

Pilestedt’s announcement follows the phenomenal success of Helldivers 2, which launched in February 2024 and became PlayStation Studios’ fastest-selling game, reaching 12 million copies sold within 12 weeks. This success has led to a film adaptation. Pilestedt became the public face of Helldivers 2, actively engaging with the community online, addressing both praise and criticism. However, this high profile also brought an unprecedented level of online toxicity, a challenge Pilestedt openly discussed last May.

Prior to Helldivers 2, Arrowhead enjoyed success with the original Helldivers and Magicka. The massive success of Helldivers 2, however, significantly increased the studio’s visibility and, unfortunately, the level of negative community interaction. Pilestedt highlighted the significant increase in threats and abusive behavior directed at the studio's staff, a new challenge for the team.

The launch of Helldivers 2 was initially hampered by server issues, leading to player frustration. Subsequent complaints included weapon balance concerns and criticism of Premium Warbonds. The most significant backlash stemmed from Sony’s initial requirement for PC players to link their accounts to PlayStation Network, a decision later reversed following a review-bombing campaign on Steam. Arrowhead’s community managers reported a week’s worth of work was lost dealing with the fallout from this controversy.

Following Helldivers 2’s release, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer to focus on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly of Paradox Interactive, succeeded him as CEO.

While details about Arrowhead’s next game remain undisclosed, its release is likely some time away. Meanwhile, updates for Helldivers 2 continue, with the recent addition of a third enemy faction, the Illuminate, adding fresh content to the game.
