Deadlock Announces Major Update: From Four Lanes to Three
Deadlock, the innovative third-person MOBA from Valve, is set to undergo a significant transformation with its latest major update. This update, announced on February 26, 2025, via a detailed post on Steam, marks a pivotal shift in the game's map structure and gameplay mechanics. The most notable change is the reduction from four lanes to three, simplifying the map layout and enhancing the overall player experience.
Four-lane Map Becomes Three Lanes
The transition from four lanes to three is accompanied by a comprehensive overhaul of the map. Valve's update includes "a large range of accompanying map-wide changes regarding visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, powerup buffs, juke spots, mid boss, etc." This redesign aims to streamline the gameplay while maintaining the unique elements that set Deadlock apart in the MOBA genre.
In addition to the map changes, the update introduces modifications to farming mechanics. Players will no longer need to last-hit enemies to summon Soul Orbs, making early laning phases more accessible. Furthermore, the patch notes highlight improvements in the game's netcode and client performance, promising a smoother gaming experience.
Vital Update for Deadlock
This update could be the key to revitalizing interest in Deadlock. After reaching an all-time peak of 171,490 active players in September 2024, the game experienced a 90% drop in player count, with only about 17,000 players active last month. The community is hopeful that these changes will bring back the excitement and engagement that initially drew players to Deadlock.
Valve Developer Yoshi announced on Deadlock's Discord server in January 2025 that the team would adjust their update schedule. The previous two-week cycle hindered the implementation of significant changes. Yoshi stated, "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year."
Currently, Deadlock remains in active development and playtesting, accessible only through friend invites. There is no official release date announced yet. For more information and updates on Deadlock, visit our dedicated page.
