Application Description

Bimmer-tool is your go-to solution for managing and diagnosing your BMW's performance, particularly when it comes to clearing fault codes and checking the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This powerful tool not only reads and clears fault codes but also enables DPF regeneration requests, provides engine live data, and much more. Whether you're dealing with a DPF issue or just need to reset your oil or brake service intervals, bimmer-tool has you covered.

For BMW models predating 2008, keep in mind that the application's functionality might be limited. To ensure you get the most out of bimmer-tool, a K+DCan USB cable connection is recommended. Using a wireless ELM adapter with these older models might not be feasible, or you might not have access to all features.

Choosing the right OBD adapter is crucial for optimal performance. The K+DCan cable, ENET adapter (suitable for F/G series), or specific Bluetooth adapters like Vgate vLinker, UniCarScan, Carista, and Veepeak OBDCheck BLE are recommended to ensure reliability. Each of these adapters has its own setup requirements, so make sure to follow the provided links for detailed instructions.

With bimmer-tool, you can:

  • Monitor the DPF regeneration status and access detailed information.
  • Initiate DPF regeneration when necessary.
  • Reset DPF adaptation values, which is essential after replacing the filter.
  • Check exhaust fumes pressure and injector adjustments.
  • View actual and expected values for air mass, intake manifold pressure, and fuel pressure.
  • Log data into a CSV file for in-depth analysis.
  • Register battery replacements without altering battery properties.
  • Reset lamp circuits blocked due to short-circuit errors.
  • Reset oil and brake service intervals.

Bimmer-tool supports various OBD adapters, including the highly reliable K+D-Can USB (which requires a USB-OTG cable), the ENET cable/WiFi adapter for F & G series (with an additional USB-C to Ethernet adapter), and ELM327 Bluetooth and WiFi adapters (noting that Bluetooth connections may be slower and less stable, and only genuine ELM327 or PIC18-based adapters are compatible with older engines).

Getting started with bimmer-tool is straightforward:

  1. Connect the adapter to the OBD II socket.
  2. Turn the ignition on.
  3. Connect the adapter to your phone using the appropriate method (USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi).
  4. Open the bimmer-tool app, select your car model and year under the 'Car' section.
  5. Navigate to 'Connection', choose the connection type, adapter type, and communication protocol.
  6. Tap the 'Connect' button to begin.

Be aware of the following limitations:

  • For models before 2008 and certain series like e46/e39/e83/e53, the app requires a K+DCan cable connection and supports only the engine ECU. Wireless ELM adapter connection might not be possible.

If you encounter common issues such as 'No response' errors in pre-2008 cars using Bluetooth or WiFi adapters, try selecting the ATWM option under advanced connection settings. If you can't connect despite correct settings, force stop all diagnostic apps or restart your phone and attempt to connect again.

The app requests certain permissions to ensure full functionality:

  • Storage: For USB adapter support.
  • Photos / Media / Files: To create CSV files.
  • Bluetooth permissions: For Bluetooth adapter support.
  • Network access: For WiFi adapter support.
  • Approximate location: Not used by the app for location tracking.
