Stephen King's Cujo Will Be Reimagined In New Netflix Adaptation

Author: Leo Mar 16,2025

In the latest round of Stephen King adaptations, a new film version of Cujo is on the horizon. Netflix is set to produce, with Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment attached as producer. While still in early development—no writers or directors are currently attached—the project promises a fresh take on King's chilling tale.

King's 1981 novel was famously adapted into a 1983 cult classic directed by Lewis Teague. The film, starring Dee Wallace, centers on a mother's desperate fight for survival against a rabid St. Bernard, Cujo, after a deadly bat bite transforms the once-gentle dog. Trapped in a car with a failing engine, she and her son face both the relentless canine and the sweltering heat.

Cujo joins a recent resurgence of King adaptations on screen. Oz Perkins' adaptation of "The Monkey" premiered in February. Further bolstering the King cinematic universe this year are The Running Man (starring Glen Powell), JT Mollner's The Long Walk (also produced by Lee and Vertigo), and the HBO IT prequel series, Welcome to Derry. Additionally, a Prime Video series adaptation of Carrie, helmed by Mike Flanagan, is also in the works.

It's a golden age for Stephen King fans, and this new Cujo adaptation promises to add another thrilling chapter to the ongoing cinematic saga.
