Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game, despite initially positive reviews, has underwhelmed both critics and players, leading to disappointing sales figures and a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price. The game's combat and stealth mechanics have been widely criticized.
Adding to Ubisoft's woes, recent reports indicate that Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed sequel to a popular title, clearly outperformed Outlaws, even achieving a higher ranking in European sales charts for 2024. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws was recently ranked only 47th in best-selling games of 2024.
Several factors contribute to this disparity. Jedi: Survivor benefited from being a highly anticipated sequel to a successful game and received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its April 2023 release. Furthermore, a subsequent update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One platforms further boosted its sales.
Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing post-launch support from Massive Entertainment. This support includes updates and story DLC, such as the November release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune," slated for Spring 2025 and featuring Hondo Ohnaka. However, these efforts have so far failed to significantly improve the game's overall performance. Ubisoft acknowledged in September that the game fell short of projected sales.
The underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws raises concerns about Ubisoft's future, prompting discussions about potential private acquisition of the company. While Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment remain hopeful that future DLC will revitalize the game, its current sales trajectory remains a significant setback.
