Sony, the PlayStation maker, has contributed $5 million to aid first responders, community recovery, and support programs for those impacted by the devastating wildfires currently engulfing Southern California.
In a joint statement shared on X/Twitter, Kenichiro Yoshida (Chairman and CEO) and Hiroki Totoki (President and COO) emphasized Sony's longstanding connection to Los Angeles: "Los Angeles has been the home of our entertainment business for more than 35 years," they stated, pledging continued collaboration with local leaders to optimize Sony Group's contribution to relief and rebuilding efforts.
The crisis, which began on January 7th, persists, with three major wildfires continuing to spread across the Los Angeles area. According to BBC reports, the fires have claimed 24 lives, with 23 individuals still unaccounted for. Firefighters are preparing for heightened challenges as stronger winds are forecast.
Sony's generous donation is part of a larger corporate response. CNBC reports that other significant contributions include $15 million from Disney, $10 million each from Netflix and Comcast, $5 million from the NFL, $2.5 million from Walmart, and $1 million from Fox, among other corporate donations.
