This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary library still seeing re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a floppy-eared cat-like creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. It boasts vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's most successful game and propelling the PlayStation to the forefront. While a remake exists, the original FFVII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. Though later entries became increasingly unconventional, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, action-packed experience reminiscent of GI Joe. Its engaging gameplay is further enhanced by the availability of its PlayStation 2 sequels on the Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. The game's vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While I could easily fill this list with Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and FFVII to showcase other gems. Chrono Cross, though overshadowed by Chrono Trigger, stands as a brilliant and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. It also features one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever created.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I appreciate most Mega Man games, my perspective is colored by nostalgia. Objectively, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 are the strongest entries in the X series, with X4 showcasing superior cohesion. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience these titles firsthand.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Sony published several non-first-party titles, and Tomba! is a prime example. This unique platformer blends adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it offers a deceptively challenging experience.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port of Grandia forms the basis of the HD release. Developed by many Lunar creators, Grandia stands out with its bright, cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system. The collection also includes another worthy title.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut marked the beginning of an iconic era. While quality varied across the five games, the original's focus on tomb raiding remains a highlight. This remastered collection allows players to experience the first three adventures.
moon ($18.99)
This Japanese-exclusive title deconstructs the traditional RPG, offering a more adventure-focused experience with a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message make it a worthwhile experience.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments below! Thank you for following this series.
