PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview

If you polled golf game enthusiasts about which pro sports franchise they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. Even MLB or NHL might rank higher than a new golf title. Yet, 2K is back for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's clear there's much to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for a decade, starting with The Golf Club before partnering with 2K and rebranding to PGA Tour 2K in 2020. That experience shines through in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive real-world course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor issues like occasional framerate hiccups on PC (when surveying holes) are easily overshadowed by the overall polished experience.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control—pull down to wind up, push forward to strike—felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for customization, from forgiving to brutally realistic, impacting the sensitivity to thumb movements. A simpler "Perfect Swing" mode caters to casual players. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics enhance realism, and playing as Tiger Woods (this year's cover athlete) provided a significant advantage.

MyCareer mode gets a boost with engaging narrative mechanics. I even had a movie role offered by Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin, due to licensing). Choices influence stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear affecting performance. Skill upgrades are tied to gameplay and winning, and the addition of regularly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, allowed for reasonable self-representation. Skill trees add a welcome layer of progression. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay. Asynchronous modes cater to players with varying schedules.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to gush over, but its overall polish and solid gameplay make it a strong contender for golf fans and those seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is available, allowing you to experience it firsthand.
