Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws: Sales Underwhelm Despite Critical Acclaim

Ubisoft's highly anticipated Star Wars Outlaws, intended as a financial turnaround, has reportedly underperformed sales expectations, causing a dip in the company's share price. This follows a week of consecutive declines.

The game, launched August 30th, received positive critical reviews but failed to meet projected sales figures. This underperformance, coupled with the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows), another key title for Ubisoft's financial recovery, has raised concerns.

Ubisoft's Q1 2024-25 report emphasized the importance of Star Wars Outlaws and AC Shadows as long-term growth drivers. While the company noted a 15% increase in console and PC session days, largely due to Games-as-a-Service, and a 7% year-on-year rise in MAUs to 38 million, the Star Wars title's sales have been described as "sluggish."

J.P. Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven lowered his sales projection for Star Wars Outlaws from 7.5 million units to 5.5 million units by March 2025, citing weaker-than-expected performance despite positive reviews.

This sales shortfall contributed to a significant drop in Ubisoft's share price. On September 3rd, shares fell 5.1%, followed by a further 2.4% decline the next morning, reaching their lowest point since 2015 and adding to a year-to-date drop exceeding 30%.

The discrepancy between critical acclaim and player reception is evident. While Game8 awarded Star Wars Outlaws a 90/100 rating, Metacritic's user score stands at a significantly lower 4.5/10. This suggests a disconnect between critical opinion and consumer response, highlighting the challenges Ubisoft faces in revitalizing its financial performance.
