George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement. The Game of Thrones author conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller, and his contribution was heavily featured in promotional materials and the game's credits.
Asked by IGN at Fan Fest 2025 about a potential Elden Ring sequel, Martin sidestepped the question but revealed discussions regarding a film adaptation. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring," he stated. This isn't the first such suggestion; FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a "very strong partner" due to FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.
However, Martin revealed a potential obstacle: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He stated, "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The long-awaited sixth installment of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series continues to face delays, with Martin himself acknowledging the significant time lapse and the possibility of its completion remaining uncertain.
Regarding his Elden Ring contribution, Martin described his role in world-building, collaborating with FromSoftware to create the game's backstory, spanning thousands of years prior to the game's present. He detailed the collaborative process, involving multiple sessions and iterative feedback between himself and the FromSoftware team.
When asked if unused material exists, Martin confirmed that substantial world-building details were created that didn't make it into the final game, mirroring the extensive background lore found in works like Tolkien's. This suggests potential for future installments or adaptations.
