Microsoft has announced a delay for the highly anticipated reboot of the Fable series, shifting its release from 2025 to 2026. This news comes alongside a first look at brand new gameplay footage, giving fans a glimpse into what to expect from this revival of the beloved Xbox franchise.
Originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, Fable is now being crafted by UK-based studio Playground Games, renowned for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series. In a recent episode of the Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, who transitioned from head of Rare to head of Xbox Game Studios last fall, shared his enthusiasm for the project. He emphasized that the extra time is necessary to ensure the game meets the high expectations set by Playground's previous successes.
Duncan expressed his confidence in Playground Games, citing their history of creating visually stunning and critically acclaimed games. He highlighted the team's approach to Fable, promising a beautifully realized version of Albion infused with British humor and engaging gameplay. "We do these things for the best of the games and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best game for the community," Duncan stated, reassuring fans that the wait will be worthwhile.
Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled a 50-second pre-alpha gameplay clip. This footage showcased various elements of Fable, including combat with different weapons such as a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, and a two-handed sword, as well as a fireball magic attack. The clip also featured scenes of city walking, a character riding a horse through a fantasy forest, and the iconic chicken-kicking moment, giving a clear indication of the game's visual and gameplay ambitions.
The Fable reboot, described as a "new beginning" when announced in 2020, has been steadily revealed through various showcases. In 2023, the Xbox Game Showcase provided a deeper look into the game with a trailer featuring Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd. Last year, during the Xbox Showcase event in June 2024, another trailer was released, further building anticipation for this significant title.
As the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010, this reboot is one of Xbox Game Studios' most eagerly awaited projects. With the additional development time, fans can look forward to a game that not only honors the legacy of the series but also pushes the boundaries of what a modern Fable game can be.
