Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly awaited Switch 2 introduces exciting enhancements to its Joy-Con controllers, notably including mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a publication detailing a patent filed by Nintendo for the Switch 2's Joy-Con.

The document sheds light on the new functionalities of the controller, with a particular emphasis on its mouse-like features. This innovation was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the controller was shown being dragged across a flat surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse.

The patent largely confirms the rumors surrounding the new Joy-Con, despite Nintendo's reticence about sharing details on the Switch 2.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 retains the detachable design from the original Nintendo Switch, allowing both Joy-Cons to be separated from the console. The standout feature, as highlighted in the patent, is the Joy-Con's ability to function as a mouse.

According to the publication, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

Additionally, the Joy-Cons can be charged using a new docking station capable of charging up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A new attachment, featuring a magnetic connection between the Joy-Con and the console, includes a wrist strap similar to that of the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side, which can also function as a mouse. These controllers can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not all make it to the final product of the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the functions of its Joy-Con or any related accessories.
