The film adaptation of the acclaimed 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs may have a new lease on life, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. Earlier this month, the project was confirmed to be canceled, but a recent social media interaction suggests there might still be hope.

As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a movie version of Sleeping Dogs on X/Twitter, stating that he is actively working on reviving the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu declared, sparking renewed interest in the adaptation.

Originally announced in 2017, the film was set to star Donnie Yen. However, it vanished from the radar a year later, and just weeks ago, Yen confirmed its cancellation. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

With the project seemingly dead in the water, fans had lost all hope for a cinematic continuation of the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, Liu's response to a random social media post has reignited the possibility. Whether he will successfully secure the rights or manage to get the film rolling remains uncertain.

Sleeping Dogs was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, featuring the gripping story of detective Wei Shen infiltrating one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game received high praise, earning an 8/10 from IGN, yet no sequels were ever developed.
