Koei Tecmo to Release New Dynasty Warriors Game and Unannounced AAA

Koei Tecmo’s recent financial report for Q1 2024 summarized upcoming projects from its internal studios. Omega Force is developing "Dynasty Warriors Origins," a novel tactical action game branching from the Dynasty Warriors series. Launching in 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam), it's the first main Dynasty Warriors entry since 2018’s Dynasty Warriors 9 (followed by a 2022 global expansion). The game features a "Nameless Hero" during China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), post-Han dynasty.

The July 29 report also spotlighted two other global releases: "Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake," and "FAIRY TAIL 2." Koei Tecmo is also developing multiple unannounced games, including at least one AAA title.

"Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake" arrives October 2024, celebrating the original's 20th anniversary, on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC. "FAIRY TAIL 2," a sequel to the 2020 RPG, releases this winter on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

Meanwhile, Koei Tecmo’s Q1 2024 console profits stemmed largely from continued sales of Rise of the Ronin. The company anticipates robust sales for this open-world action RPG, viewing it as crucial to its AAA ambitions.

Koei Tecmo Aims for Consistent AAA Releases

Throughout its prior report earlier this year, Koei Tecmo expressed its ambition to achieve prominence in the triple-A scene, launching a new triple-A studio that has reportedly commenced work on its debut project. Koei Tecmo is developing several unannounced titles, including at least one AAA game as revealed in the recent financial report, though not much is known about this forthcoming project yet.

AAA games, often called triple-A games, are high-budget video games typically developed and published by leading game studios, which Koei Tecmo has been endeavoring to become. These games typically involve extensive development, marketing, distribution, and large development teams.

"To expand the Company’s portfolio of titles, AAA Studio was established. In order to achieve medium- to long-term growth, we will continue to build a system that enables us to release large-scale titles consistently," Koei Tecmo concluded in the recent report.
