"Minecraft Guide: Obtaining Armadillo Scutes"

Author: Harper Apr 28,2025

Introduced in the *Minecraft* 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, the Armadillo is a passive mob found across various warm biomes. This creature is crucial for crafting the new Wolf Armor, thanks to its unique "Scutes." Here's your comprehensive guide on how to obtain Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

Armadillos are found in warm biomes, spawning in groups of two or three. They have a distinctive defense mechanism where they roll into a ball if approached too quickly. To prevent this, approach them slowly and carefully.

The biomes where you can find Armadillos include:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

There are two primary methods to collect Armadillo Scutes:

1. Watch and Wait

Similar to how Chickens drop Eggs, Armadillos drop a Scute every 5-10 minutes. This passive method requires no items or effort, making it an easy choice. However, if you're looking to craft multiple sets of Wolf Armor, this can be a slow and somewhat tedious process.

2. Brushing

The preferred method for many players is using a Brush, a tool typically used for investigating suspicious sand or gravel. When used on an Armadillo, you can obtain one Scute per brushing. To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick, placed in that order down the center of the Crafting Table.

In the Java Edition of *Minecraft*, an unenchanted Brush can be used on an Armadillo four times before breaking, while in Bedrock Edition, it lasts for five uses. Brushes can be repaired by combining two damaged ones, and enchanted Brushes can be combined at an Anvil to retain enchantments. A Brush can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, or Curse of Vanishing.

To collect Scutes using this method, approach the Armadillos slowly to avoid triggering their roll defense. Once close, use the appropriate button to brush the Armadillo, repeating the process until you've gathered the desired number of Scutes.

Armadillo in Minecraft

Once you have collected six Armadillo Scutes, you can craft a set of Wolf Armor at a Crafting Table. Whether you opt for the passive waiting game or the more interactive brushing method, these are the current ways to gather and use Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.
