Activision's Costly Call of Duty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Crossover Has Some Players Saying Black Ops 6 Should Just Go Free-to-Play at This Point

Call of Duty's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover is sparking outrage among players due to its hefty price tag. Unlocking all the themed items could cost upwards of $90 in COD Points, leading many to call for Black Ops 6 to become free-to-play.

Activision's recent announcement of the Black Ops 6 Season 02 Reloaded content, including the TMNT crossover, detailed premium bundles for each turtle (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael), each anticipated to cost 2,400 COD Points ($19.99). Collecting the entire set would therefore cost approximately $80.

Adding insult to injury, a premium event pass costing 1,100 COD Points ($10) is also available, featuring Splinter and other cosmetics, obtainable only through this purchase. The free track offers some less desirable items.

The community's frustration stems from the crossover's focus on purely cosmetic items with no impact on gameplay. Many argue the high cost is unnecessary, especially given the game's already high price point. The introduction of a second premium event pass further fuels the argument that Black Ops 6 is adopting a free-to-play monetization model similar to Fortnite.

Reddit users voiced their concerns, with one stating, "Activision casually glossing over the fact that they want you to pay $80+ if you want the 4 Turtles, plus another $10+ if you want the TMNT event pass rewards… DESPICABLE!" Others expressed concern over the potential for future seasonal event passes.

Black Ops 6's monetization strategy is multifaceted, including seasonal battle passes (1,100 COD Points/$9.99), a premium BlackCell battle pass ($29.99), and a constant stream of in-store cosmetics. The TMNT crossover's premium event pass adds another layer to this already extensive system.

Players argue that this aggressive monetization, while perhaps acceptable in a free-to-play title like Warzone, is unacceptable in a $70 game. The comparison to free-to-play models like Fortnite and Apex Legends is frequently made, highlighting the perceived disparity.

Despite the criticism, Activision and Microsoft are likely to maintain their current strategy, given Black Ops 6's record-breaking success. The game’s impressive launch numbers clearly demonstrate its profitability, justifying the current monetization approach from a financial perspective.
