Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tứ lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the north. The names "Phỏm" and "Tá lả" are regional variations. The objective is to collect sets of cards ("Phỏm") and minimize the value of remaining unmatched cards ("Junk cards"). The game uses a standard 52-card deck and offers diverse gameplay, making it a favorite for family gatherings and celebrations.

Key Terms:

• Phỏm: Three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or three or more cards of the same rank.
• Junk cards: Cards not part of a Phỏm.
• Ù: A player with three Phỏm (no junk cards) wins instantly.
• Stomach (Cọc): The remaining undealt cards.
• Móm: A player unable to form any Phỏm at the end of the game.
• Take the pin (Ăn cọc): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
• Send (Chốt): Discarding a card that completes an opponent's Phỏm in the final round. This card doesn't count against the player's score.
• Compensation (Bù): If a player takes an opponent's pin and another player subsequently declares Ù, the pin-taker must compensate. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Re (Rê): If a player discards a card and another player subsequently plays, the discarded cards are returned to the player, allowing for an extra turn.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) starts with 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
• Turns: Counter-clockwise, starting with the dealer.
• Playing: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can either take the card to form a Phỏm or draw a card from the Stomach. After taking or drawing, a card is discarded.
• Game End: The game ends when a player declares Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù. In the latter case, the player with the lowest junk card score wins.
• Final Round: Players must complete their Phỏm, send cards if possible, and then discard their final card.
• Scoring: A, J, Q, K count as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards are face value. The lowest score wins. Specific point adjustments apply for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and last place, taking/giving pins, and Ù.

Scoring Summary:

• 1st Place: +6 points
• 2nd Place: -1 point
• 3rd Place: -2 points
• Last Place: -3 points
• Pin Taker: -4 points
• Pin Receiver: +4 points
• Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
• Móm: Loses 4 points to the winner.
