Played with a 24-card deck, Euchre pits two teams of two against each other. When a team "orders up trump," they declare their intention to win the majority of tricks. Winning three or four tricks earns one point; winning all five earns two. Failing to win three tricks ("being euchred") costs the team two points, awarded to the opponents.

A confident player can "go alone," attempting the hand without a partner. If successful (winning all five tricks), the lone player's team scores four points; three or four tricks earns one point. Being euchred while playing alone still only awards two points to the opposing team.

The core Euchre rule: you're never forced to play trump (unless it's the lead suit), but you must follow suit if possible.
