World of Warcraft is set to enhance its racing experience with the introduction of two new types of races in Patch 11.1: Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races featuring Goblin jetpacks. These races will replace Skyriding in the upcoming Undermine zone, which is part of the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.

Patch 11.1, titled "Undermined," transports players to Undermine, a vast subterranean metropolis and the Goblins' capital city. Despite its expansive nature, flying is prohibited in this zone, making the D.R.I.V.E. system—an innovative, customizable, car-like mount—a key feature for navigating the city's streets at speeds surpassing those of Skyriding. The patch introduces Breakneck races that fully exploit the capabilities of the D.R.I.V.E. system.

Additionally, Patch 11.1 brings Skyrocket races, which utilize Goblin jetpacks for aerial challenges. Unlike traditional flying or Skyriding, these races introduce a unique movement style where players maintain momentum and altitude without the ability to stop in mid-air. As demonstrated by WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, collecting rings during these races boosts speed, but increased velocity makes turning less responsive, adding a layer of difficulty.

Due to the absence of Skyriding in Undermine, the zone will not feature Skyriding races. Instead, players can participate in both Breakneck and Skyrocket races, each offering achievements for completing races at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. Both types of races also include reverse versions, though they lack Advanced or Challenge courses found in some Skyriding races.

The initial reception to the Skyrocket races has been mixed. While some fans are eager to experience this new form of racing, others have criticized the jetpack flying as stiff and less responsive compared to Skyriding. However, with Patch 11.1 still in development, there is ample opportunity for Blizzard to refine these races before their expected release in February.
