Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Fear not, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still very much involved, and we have a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep the excitement alive.

"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm for the project. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Currently, details about the movie remain largely under wraps. The only confirmed detail is its setting, which is post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified the timeline in a previous interview with Deadline in February, stating, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.

Kennedy also mentioned in the same discussion that Levy's film will hit theaters after 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she noted. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this highly anticipated project.

Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that progress is being made on Levy's film. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the earliest release window is the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Since the release of the critically divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film. During this period, several projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these changes, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, with reports from THR indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars slate extends even further. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising an immersive continuation of the series.
