The Nintendo GameCube, despite being nearly 25 years old, boasts a dedicated following of enthusiasts eager to acquire the rarest versions of this iconic console. Among the most sought-after are the DVD-playing Panasonic Q and numerous limited-edition variants like the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red console. However, perhaps the rarest of them all is the Space World GameCube prototype, originally showcased at Nintendo Space World 2000. Remarkably, one of these LED-equipped prototypes resurfaced in 2023 at ConsoleVariations, discovered by Donny Fillerup.
Several key features distinguish the Space World GameCube from the retail model. Most significantly, it lacks internal hardware beyond a few LEDs, creating the illusion of functionality. Physically, the black top logo is semi-transparent at the bottom, allowing visibility of any disc inserted, and the vents also differ slightly. According to ConsoleVariations, over 20 variations exist between this prototype and the original Japanese GameCube.
Intriguingly, the listing excludes the console's controller, which also differs significantly from the standard GameCube controller. This isn't Fillerup's first venture into selling rare consoles; in 2022, he auctioned a Golden Wii (once gifted to the British Royal Family by THQ) for $36,000.
Therefore, a $100,000 price tag for this historically important prototype might not be entirely unreasonable. While the asking price is substantial, prospective buyers with deep pockets could potentially acquire this piece of gaming history. Furthermore, Fillerup is open to offers, suggesting the final sale price may be lower than the listed amount.
