The unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 through its announcement trailer showcases a significant leap in size from its predecessor. As the familiar Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the tablet segment expands and transforms into the new, larger model. This evolution marks a clear departure from the compact, pocket-friendly handhelds of Nintendo's past, aligning more closely with the trend of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
Although Nintendo has yet to release the exact dimensions of the Switch 2, we can estimate its size based on the trailer and insights from a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to interact with a Switch 2 mock-up by Genki, which closely mirrors the design seen in Nintendo's official trailer. This suggests that the measurements we obtained at CES are likely very close to those of the final product.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement reflects the diagonal size of the display, excluding the bezels, aligning with a rumor from early 2024. We anticipate the screen to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**. If these estimations hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally and **66% larger in overall area** than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display. Such an increase could significantly enhance the visual experience, assuming the display technology meets high standards.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen size would be **45% larger diagonally** and **111% larger in surface area** than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 would be **14% larger diagonally** and **30% larger in total area**. In the context of the Steam Deck, the Switch 2's screen would surpass the original Steam Deck's 7-inch display and the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch display, being **8% larger diagonally** and **11% larger in overall area** than the latter.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The larger screen naturally results in a bigger console overall. The original Switch already required spacious pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely fit only in cargo pants pockets or bags. Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicate that the Switch 2 spans about **265mm in length and 115mm in height**, including the Joy-Cons. This makes the Switch 2 **approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**, which measures 239mm by 102mm.
In comparison, the Switch 2 would be around **61% larger** than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and **12% smaller** than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). While we couldn't precisely measure the depth of the mock-up, it appears to be similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness, suggesting a significant increase in footprint but not in depth.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The transformation animation in the Switch 2 trailer indicates that the Joy-Con controllers maintain a similar width to those of the original Switch but have increased in height. Our analysis suggests that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons are likely to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**, which is the same width as the original but **13mm taller**. If accurate, the new Joy-Con would be **approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
By subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate that the **Switch 2 screen unit measures 200mm in length and 115mm in height**. This would make it **around 31% larger** than the original Switch's screen unit. The size accommodates an 8-inch 16:9 screen with approximately 11mm bezels on the sides and 8mm bezels on the top and bottom, which is slimmer on the sides than the original Switch but similar in the top and bottom.
These estimates are based on our best efforts and may vary when Nintendo releases the official dimensions. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we are confident that these figures are close to the mark. We eagerly await the opportunity to go hands-on with the console later this year to confirm our estimations.
