The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to earlier rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality.
The reveal trailer showcases detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These then move across the surface, mimicking mousepad movement. A visible slider pad on one connector further supports this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice. While Nintendo hasn't confirmed this feature or its implications, fans envision applications in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard games like Civilization. However, given Nintendo's innovative history, first-party software integration could also take unexpected forms. The possibilities remain open.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding potential mouse support and a new Joy-Con button, several details are confirmed: the system's name (Nintendo Switch 2), its 2025 release, and an upcoming Mario Kart title. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is also assured. Further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
