Nintendo Switch 2 Filings Reveal NFC Support, Suggesting Amiibo Will Work With It

Recent filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have shed light on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, revealing that it will support Near Field Communication (NFC), suggesting compatibility with Amiibo figures. This feature is integrated into the right Joy-Con, mirroring the setup of the original Nintendo Switch. A key question for fans is whether the Switch 2 will support the existing Amiibo lineup, which unlocks various in-game content.

Additionally, the FCC documents confirm that the Switch 2 can be charged via its bottom USB-C port or a new top port, a feature anticipated by fans since the console's initial announcement. The new model will also upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with up to 80MHz bandwidth, an improvement over the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) found in the original Switch. However, there is no mention of support for Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E in these filings.

The Switch 2 retains a maximum voltage rating of 15V, but the filings also reference a 20V AC adapter, leaving the actual charging speed uncertain.

A Nintendo patent hints at a novel feature for the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers: the ability to attach them upside down. This innovation uses magnets instead of the rails used in the original Switch, potentially allowing for customizable button placement and headphone port positioning. If implemented, this could introduce new gameplay mechanics.

If the Switch 2 follows the patent's design, Nintendo may provide a detailed explanation during a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time on April 2.

Although Nintendo has not confirmed a release window, speculation points to a launch between June and September. This timeline is supported by hands-on events scheduled until June and statements from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, indicating a release before September.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a brief trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. While many details remain undisclosed, such as the full game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, there is growing interest in the Joy-Con mouse theory.
