The Golden Joystick Awards 2024 have unveiled a diverse lineup of nominees across over ten categories, spotlighting the gaming industry's finest achievements. This year marks a significant moment for indie games, with the introduction of a new category dedicated to self-developed and self-published indie titles. The awards, which have been celebrating gaming excellence since 1983, are set to take place on November 21, 2024, and will honor games released between November 11, 2023, and October 4, 2024.
The spotlight on indie games this year is particularly bright, with titles such as Balatro and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes receiving multiple nominations. The Golden Joystick Awards 2024 feature 19 categories, including the newly introduced "Best Indie Game - Self Published" category. This award is designed to recognize indie titles developed and published by smaller teams, highlighting the growing impact of indie games in the industry. As the organizers stated, "The award recognizes the increasingly broad definition of 'indie' games, with a special focus on teams without the financial or technical support of a larger games publisher; and titles entering markets less well served by traditional publishing."

Fans Angry GOTY Nominees 2024 Seemingly Snubs Black Myth Wukong
The Golden Joystick Awards have yet to finalize and announce the nominees for the Ultimate Game of the Year category. However, the gaming community has already ignited discussions, particularly over the absence of fan-favorite titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Space Marine 2, and Black Myth Wukong from the PC and Console Game of the Year nominees.
Fans of Black Myth Wukong, in particular, have voiced their frustration, accusing the awards of overlooking their beloved game. One user expressed on social media, "When you are accused, you use the 'UGOTY' award as a shield, we are well aware that you are trying to maintain your arrogant 'authority and elitism' while telling us the deceptive lie of 'We stand with u'. But it can only prove the differences between media and the players."
In response to the backlash, the Golden Joystick Awards organization clarified via a tweet that the full list of Ultimate Game of The Year (UGOTY) nominees has not yet been released: "Thanks to everyone who has been in touch to ask why Game X or Game Y was not included in our GOTY list. One reason is that we have not *launched* our GOTY shortlist, which opens on Nov 4."
