Set within the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed welcomes players to a richly detailed world, regardless of prior series knowledge. While familiarity enhances the experience, the narrative unfolds organically through interactions and environmental clues.

The player takes on the role of an emissary dispatched by the Emperor of Aedyr to investigate a soul-blighting fungal plague in the Living Lands. In this world, souls cycle through life, death, and reincarnation. The protagonist possesses a unique divine mark, a growth resembling plants or fungi, stemming from a god's touch at birth—the god's identity remains a mystery.
