The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the final stage of Chapter 2 in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, with the ultimate goal of defeating Dong Zhuo. Reaching him is no small feat and will likely demand more time than any previous mission.
As you start the mission, focus on capturing the four enemy bases located in the bottom right of the map. After securing two of these, a cutscene will trigger, showing a cavalry unit, led by Zhang Liao, descending from a hill toward your position. Keep your strategy on track; you'll naturally encounter and defeat this cavalry as you progress. Defeating Zhang Liao will reward you with the twin pike, a valuable addition to your arsenal.
Once all bases are under your control, you're ready to assault Hulao Gate, leading to your first significant clash with Dong Zhuo’s forces. This fight is chaotic, but your priority should be to protect Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic. This will weaken the defenses, allowing you to advance toward Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
At this critical moment, Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu to the frontline. It's crucial not to engage Lu Bu in combat; a one-on-one fight with him is almost certain defeat. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers on the outskirts to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu’s presence will severely drain.
Lu Bu will eventually move to attack your main base, targeting Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to chase after him, adhering to the *Dynasty Warriors* mantra: do not pursue Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to stall Lu Bu, buying you time to focus on Dong Zhuo. This creates a time-sensitive situation; Liu Bei’s forces won't hold out indefinitely. When the game indicates their retreat, ensure you're close to defeating Dong Zhuo, or Lu Bu will overrun Yuan Shao, ending your mission prematurely.
Go After Dong Zhuo
With Lu Bu occupied, if you need to restock on meat buns for healing, quickly visit any of your conquered bases. Then, prepare for the final push. While Cao Cao readies his charge, head north and west to capture the additional bases. Once you have three squads prepared and your health is restored, enter the closest commander’s circle and launch your attack.
You'll face a massive enemy force as Dong Zhuo unleashes his Grand Tactic, hurling fireballs at you. To counter this, swiftly destroy the two front catapults. If possible, activate Musou Rage to break through the lines of soldiers guarding the catapults. After clearing the path, focus on defeating the surrounding soldiers and officers to allow your troops to demolish the catapults, ending Dong Zhuo’s Grand Tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will initiate another Grand Tactic. This time, you need to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Take the right stairs to confront the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has sided with Dong Zhuo. If you can, challenge her to a duel; defeating her will make the subsequent fight more manageable.
With the second Grand Tactic neutralized, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. Your forces, bolstered by high morale, should easily overpower his remaining troops. Even if Dian Wei launches another Grand Tactic, it will only facilitate your victory. At this point, avoid a direct duel with Dong Zhuo; simply defeat him alongside his weakened forces.
And that’s how you successfully complete the Battle of Hulao Gate in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
