Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming, offering a unique and immersive strategic experience.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity

Announced at the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025, 2K Games and Firaxis Games confirmed Civ VII VR's exclusive launch on Meta's latest VR headsets. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about this new era of strategic gaming. Meta's Chris Pruett, Director of Games, highlighted the significance of Civ VII VR within Meta's growing VR/MR gaming portfolio, emphasizing its appeal to dedicated strategy gamers. While Civ VII will be available on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 release is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR transports players to a detailed "Command Table," allowing for a unique perspective on the game world. Players can zoom in for intricate details or zoom out for a strategic overview, mimicking the feel of a physical board game. The game supports both immersive VR and MR modes, seamlessly switching between them. 2K Games describes the VR experience as being set in an ornate museum, while the MR version adapts to the player's physical space.

The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, supporting up to four players with Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. The VR/MR experience allows players to see their opponents as their chosen world leaders. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the Civ VII early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe/Founder's Edition purchasers). The team has committed to significant UI improvements to enhance gameplay clarity and intuitiveness. Future updates will include community-requested features like team-based multiplayer, expanded map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.
