Avowed boasts a robust character creator, allowing players to customize their character's physical appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and initial narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon, though all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.

Background Details:

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character boasts an academic past, graduating from Bragganhyl Academy. Their published treatise on soul lineages angered a local lord, leading to arrest, but the Emperor recognized their potential and recruited them for the imperial archives. Expect dialogue options reflecting knowledge of the occult, law, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: This Background features a tragic past. Following a village crop failure, their uncanny insights led to suspicion and accusations of witchcraft, forcing them to flee to Highcrown. The Emperor appointed them as their personal mystic. Expect dialogue reflecting spiritual awareness and interactions with magic and the Gods. This is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character and will likely resonate with the Giatta companion.

• Noble Scion: A classic case of failed privilege, this character hails from a wealthy but morally bankrupt noble family. Following a family scandal, they sought the Emperor's protection and became a valuable ally. This Background suits players who wish to remain loyal to the Empire.

• Vanguard Scout: This character was spared execution by the Empire. Preferring wilderness to city life, their tracking and spying skills make them a valuable asset. This Background is perfect for players who enjoy a hunter-style gameplay and will likely find common ground with the Marius companion.

• War Hero: This character distinguished themselves by quelling a Skaenite uprising, earning a place among elite warriors. Loyalty and grit define this character, making them a valuable asset to the Emperor. This Background aligns well with a warrior playstyle and may resonate most with the Kai companion.

Starting Weapons:

Each Background starts with a Common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:
